Joseph John Ruston (born March 3, 1809 in Poplar (London) , † March 2, 1895 in Vienna ) was a shipbuilder and mechanical engineer, shipowner and owner of the Traunsee shipping company .

Life

Joseph John Ruston was the son of the Poplar shipyard owner John Joseph Ruston. He had three brothers.

Joseph John Ruston trained as a ship carpenter and mechanical engineer. In 1832 Boulton & Watt sent him to Austria, where he took on a leading position in John Andrews' shipyard in Vienna- Neu-Leopoldau . Among other things, the steamship Nador was built there. In 1837 Andrews' shipyard had to give way to the construction of the northern railway embankment. But Ruston stayed in Austria. He directed the construction of the steamer Sophie am Traunsee , in 1840 he designed the ship Bohemia . From 1850 he was involved with his brother John in the mechanical engineering company Ruston & Evans in Karolinenthal near Prague , which was called Ruston & Co. from 1854 . Until 1869 he was involved in the management of this company, which later became known as Prager Maschinenbau AG. Ruston & Co. operated.

Together with his brother John Joseph Ruston, Joseph John Ruston ran a shipyard near Klosterneuburg from 1854 to 1859 . In 1857 they also took over the Breitfeld & Evans shipyard near Floridsdorf , which John Joseph Ruston managed until his death in 1873. Many vehicles were built in Floridsdorf that were to be used in Austrian inland shipping, but also ships for the Middle East .

In 1848 Joseph John Ruston married Isabella Elisabeth Andrews, b. Hepbourn, widow of John Andrews, who died in 1847. In 1849 he was already a widower. He acquired the rights for the Elbe and Traunsee shipping from the Andrews' heirs. In 1851 he gave up the concession for shipping on the Elbe, instead he expanded the traffic on the Traunsee together with his brother and partner John Joseph Ruston. His nephew became his partner in 1894 and continued to run the company after Joseph John Ruston's death.

The Josef-Ruston-Gasse in Jedlesee (Floridsdorf) is named after him.
