Joseph Loewenstein

Joseph Loewenstein FSC (born October 25, 1925 in Queens , New York City ) is an American clergyman and De La Salle brother .

Life

Joseph Loewenstein, one of three children who grew up during the Great Depression in Queens, New York City, attended a Dominican elementary school . With an episcopal scholarship he was able to graduate from the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School , which was run by the De La Salle Brothers . At the age of 15, he took part in training courses for the De La Salle brothers. On September 7, 1943, he joined the De La Salle Brothers in New York. After a one-year probationary period, he studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He worked for many years in Africa, particularly in Kenya, as a missionary and teacher.

In 1975 he came to the Holy Land and until 2017 worked as a lecturer, dean and president (“Vice Chancellor”) at the University of Bethlehem . He built up the university structure and organized the increasingly strong growth in the number of students. In the First Intifada between 1987 and 1991, he opposed the actions of the Israeli army . Since 2017 he has lived in a branch of his religious community in Lincroft, New Jersey. In 2018 Loewenstein was named Legacy Patron and Honorary Patron of the US Bethlehem University Foundation .

Known as "Brother Joe", Lion's Arch was also a long-time director of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) in Jerusalem.

In 2013 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota .
