Tuti Tursilawati

Tuti Tursilawati (born June 6, 1984 in Cikeusik, Majalengka, Jawa Barat ; died October 29, 2018 in Ta'if , Saudi Arabia ) was an Indonesian housekeeper who worked as a migrant worker in a private household in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia . She was convicted in 2011 for the murder of her employer, who had sexually assaulted her since 2009 , and was executed in 2018 .

Tursilawiti was convicted in 2011 for the murder of her employer, Suud Malhaq Al Utaibi, who had sexually abused her since 2009. According to her, she killed him in self-defense when he tried to rape her on May 11, 2010 . After the crime, she fled the city and was raped by nine men who had promised to take her to Mecca . She was arrested in Ta'if and sentenced to death by a Sharia court there in 2011 . She was executed on October 29, 2018.

The former president of Indonesia B. J. Habibie and senior figures had for pardon committed Tursilawatis. Indonesia's incumbent government appealed the death sentence both legally and in a letter to the Saudi King Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz , but was not informed of the impending execution . President Joko Widodo protested the execution in a phone call with Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir . He also appointed the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Jakarta . The Indonesian organization Migrant CARE called for the termination of the agreements on Indonesian workers between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Local and international human rights organizations have called for better protection for guest workers in Saudi Arabia.

Tursilawati was the third housekeeper to receive the death penalty in Saudi Arabia in 2018 . It is estimated that a total of around one million Indonesian women are housemaids in the kingdom.
