Joseph Lorich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Lorich (* early 16th century; † 1574 in Kassel ) was a German university professor and lawyer .

Life

Lorich was born as the son of Keller Johann Lorich into an influential family of scholars and officials in the Hadamar region. In later years he mostly used the Latinized name Josephus Lorichius. His brothers Gerhard Lorich and Reinhard Lorich also pursued a scholarly career , the latter, however, as a Protestant theologian.

In 1543 Lorich was professor of history at the University of Marburg , and at an unclear point in time he was also a teacher at the pedagogy in Marburg. In 1548 he moved to Kassel, where he is mentioned in 1557 as town clerk and imperial notary; an office he held until his death in 1574. In 1567, Landgrave Philipp II (Hessen-Rheinfels) appointed him councilor and servant at the court in Kassel.

Joseph Lorich is generally listed as a Catholic, which, in connection with his teaching activities at the Protestant University of Marburg, would be at least unusual.
