Joseph Schleimer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph "Joe" Schleimer (born May 31, 1909 in Mississauga , Ontario , † November 23, 1988 ibid) was a Canadian wrestler . He won a bronze free style welterweight medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics .

Career

Joe Schleimer was the descendant of German-born immigrants from the Gottscheer ethnic group in Canada, who came from Lower Carniola in Slovenia . He attended high school and began wrestling with the Christian Young Men’s Association (YMCA) in Toronto . He concentrated on the free style common in Canada at the time.

In 1934 he took part in the British Empire Games, where he won the welterweight division in front of William Fox from England and Rashid Anwar from India.

In 1936 he represented Canada at the Olympic Games in Berlin . He started again in welterweight and came there in his first fight to a victory over Rashid Anwar from India. Then he lost to Frank Lewis from the United States and won over Julian Beke from Belgium and Willy Angst from Switzerland . In his last fight he lost to Thure Andersson from Sweden . With these results he won the Olympic bronze medal .

These two international championships were the only ones he took part in. It must be taken into account, however, that there were no world championships back then and the international competition program was nowhere near as extensive as it is today.

After his playing days, Joe Schleimer worked as a wrestling trainer at the YMCA in Toronto.
