Life

As the son of the influential Jewish reform cantor Salomon Sulzer , Joseph Sulzer graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1869 as one of Karl Schlesinger's best students and was then employed as a solo cellist for the Italian Opera and as a teacher at the Conservatory in Bucharest , where he stayed for four years. In 1875 Sulzer got a job in the orchestra of the Vienna Court Opera House , which he filled for three years until he had to give up the position for health reasons. After his recovery he perfected his playing with David Popper, among others, and in 1880 was appointed soloist at the Imperial Court Opera in Vienna. From 1882 to 1885 he was a member of the Hellmesberger Quartet . In addition to his work as a cellist and chamber musician, Sulzer had also been the choir director of the Viennese religious community since 1892. Of Sulzer's compositions, the Sarabande op. 8 was recorded on record by Fritz Kreisler (recording from 1904) in the version for violin and piano.
