Joseph V (Chaldean Catholic Patriarch)

Augustinus Hindī , called Mar Joseph V († April 3, 1827 in Diyarbakır ), was an administrator of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate in Diyarbakir ( Administrator Patriarchatus Diarbekirensis ).

Life

Augustinus Hindi, biological nephew of Patriarch Joseph IV Hindi , was appointed as presbyter (priest) administrator of the Chaldean Catholic "Patriarchate of Diyarbakir ", ordained bishop of Diyarbakir in 1804 in Mardin and recognized as such by the Roman Pope. Because of the ongoing efforts to consolidate the Union of the Patriarchate of Babylon (seat in Alqosh on the Mosul plain ), the Vatican refused Augustine Hindī the title of patriarch for life .

Because of the temporary suspension of the then Chaldean Catholic Archbishop of Mosul and Patriarchal Administrator of “Babylon”, Mar Yohannan VIII Hormizd , who was controversial in Catholic circles , Augustin Hindi also officiated from the end of 1811 as a temporary delegate for the Apostolic Delegate who competed with Diyarbakır Chaldean Catholic " Patriarchate of Babylon ". The award of the pallium to Hindi as Archbishop of Diyarbakır in 1818 interpreted this as Roman recognition of his patriarchal dignity and has always called himself "Patriarch Joseph V" ever since. In 1823 Rome granted permission to episcopal ordinations for vacant seats, and Augustin ordained Hindi from 1824–1826 Bishops for Tel Keppe , Mardin , Siirt and, in the person of Joseph Audo , without Rome's approval, even for Mosul, the diocese of his rival Mar Yohannan Hormizd.

As early as 1821 Rome recognized that the Catholic "Patriarchate of Diyarbakir " historically and canonically only forms part of the traditionally an East Syrian patriarchate (modernly called the Patriarchate of Babylon ), albeit temporarily withdrawn from the jurisdiction of this patriarchate. Under these circumstances Augustin Hindi could no longer be expected to be officially awarded the title of patriarch. Mar Joseph V died in 1827. After his death, the Chaldean Catholic Special Patriarchate of Diyarbakir was fully reintegrated into the Patriarchate of Babylon by Rome in 1830 and the title of Patriarch was awarded to Mar Yohannan VIII Hormizd .
