Joseph WS deGraft-Johnson

Joseph WS deGraft-Johnson (born October 6, 1933 in Cape Coast ; † April 22, 1999 in London ) was Vice President of Ghana under President Hilla Limann from September 24, 1979 to December 31, 1981 .

Professional career

De Graft-Johnson was an engineer and lectured at the Institute of Buildings and Roads at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi , of which he later became director. He was also one of the founders and President of the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE).

Political career

During the time of the military dictatorship of the Supreme Military Council , he was in opposition to the military regime and was therefore the victim of personal attacks. After the National Redemption Council lifted the ban on political parties, Joseph de Graft Johnson joined the People's National Party when it was founded in 1979 . After the PNP won the 1979 elections, he became Ghana's first vice president in the Limann government . On December 31, 1981, the government was overthrown by a coup d'état and DeGraft-Johnson went into exile in London , where he died on April 22, 1999.
