Joseph William Kennedy

Joseph William Kennedy (born May 30, 1916 in Nacogdoches , † May 5, 1957 in St. Louis ) was an American physicist .

He received his bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College (now Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas ) in 1935, his master’s degree from the University of Kansas, and his Ph.D. in 1939. at the University of California, Berkeley . At the age of 27 he came to Los Alamos National Laboratory during the Second World War in 1943 , where he headed the chemistry and metallurgy department . After the war he was a professor at Washington University in St. Louis .

He was a co-discoverer of the element plutonium with the Americans Glenn T. Seaborg , Edwin Mattison McMillan , Michael Cefola and Arthur Wahl .
