Joseph Weber (painter)
Joseph Weber (born January 16, 1798 in Mannheim ; † February 26, 1883 there ) was a German painter.
Life and works
Weber studied in Karlsruhe ; According to Thieme / Becker, his teachers could have been Philipp Jakob Becker or Karl Kuntz , possibly also Franz Joseph Zoll , after whose death he portrayed himself when completing a memorial votive picture. From 1841 to May 1858 Weber worked in Cologne , otherwise in Mannheim. Weber mainly worked as a portrait painter. A self-portrait, which he created in 1827, became the property of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum , another from 1833 to that of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe , and a third from 1835 to that of the Schlossmuseum Mannheim. Joseph Weber portrayed Gisbert Flüggen , Max von Herding and Julius Bassermann , among others .
The picture Au premier coup shows the Karlsruhe businessman Gloeckler with two hunting trophies. A very similar portrait of this gentleman by Gustav Nehrlich's hand suggests that the two painters had contact with each other.
Weber's students included Lambert Sachs and Gisbert Flüggen.
