Gustav Nehrlich (* 1807 in Karlsruhe , † March 5, 1840 in Munich ) was a German painter.

Life

Gustav Nehrlich was trained by his father Johannes Carl Nehrlich and also studied miniature painting at the Munich Art Academy from 1829 . According to his matriculation entry, he came from Karlsruhe. Nehrlich created portrait miniatures especially for the Hessian Grand Duke Ludwig II and the Bavarian King Ludwig I and their court ranks. 16 illustrations of Goethe's Faust are also known. Nehrlich sent the drawings to Goethe in 1831. In 1864 they were published with explanations by Heinrich Düntzer ; Friedrich Schepperlen created the prints based on Nehrlich's drawings . Goethe thanked Nehrlich's father in a letter on September 19, 1831 for sending the drawings:

“That a well-packed portfolio, containing drawings by Gustav Nehrlich based on Goethe's Faust, arrived happily and gave the Weimar art lovers the opportunity to delight in the excellent talent of a witty young artist, is indicated by his father, subject to the following. Congratulations [sic!] JW v. Goethe. Weimar, September 19, 1831. "

In the Weimar district the pictures were praised, but judged as not yet fully developed. A self-portrait from 1839 shows Gustav Nehrlich with a hat sitting in front of an easel . According to Thieme / Becker , Nehrlich, who also worked as a history painter, created, among other things, two half-length portraits of Ludwig III. of Hesse and a portrait of King Ludwig I of Bavaria . A portrait of the businessman Ludwig Gloeckler von Nehrlich's hand was put up for sale in 1991. A parallel image is Joseph Weber's painting Au premier coup , in which Gloecker can be seen in the same posture and clothes as in Nehrlich's depiction.
