Joshua Eilberg
Joshua Eilberg (born February 12, 1921 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † March 24, 2004 there ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1979 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joshua Eilberg attended Central High School in Philadelphia until 1936 and then the Wharton School belonging to the University of Pennsylvania . After a subsequent law degree from the Law School of Temple University in Philadelphia and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He was also a member of the US Navy Reserve . Between 1952 and 1954 he served as the Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1954 to 1966 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he headed the democratic majority faction from 1965. In 1960, 1964 and 1968 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . He also headed a regional party district in Philadelphia ( Democratic ward leader ).
In the 1966 congressional elections , Eilberg was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Herman Toll on January 3, 1967 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1979 . During this time, among other things, the end of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War as well as the Watergate affair fell . Eilberg was temporarily chairman of the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship and International Law. In 1978 he was not re-elected.
Joshua Eilberg's political career was not free from controversy. He came under suspicion of financial infidelity in connection with a donation to a hospital in Philadelphia. He pleaded guilty and was given a five-year suspended sentence and $ 10,000 fine. He died in Philadelphia on March 24, 2004.
