Jost Hochuli

Jost Hochuli (born June 8, 1933 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss graphic artist and book designer . He lives and works in St. Gallen.

life and work

Jost Hochuli attended the arts and crafts school in St.Gallen from 1952 to 1954 and then worked from 1954 to 1955 as a trainee with Rudolf Hostettler in the Zollikofer & Co. AG printing company, St.Gallen. In consultation with Rudolf Hostettler, he then completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter , which he completed from 1955 to 1958 partly in the Zollikofer printing company and partly in the typesetting class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, where he also attended typesetting courses with Walter Käch . In 1958/59, during a stay in Paris, he attended courses with Adrian Frutiger at the École Estienne .

Back in St. Gallen, Jost Hochuli opened his atelier for commercial graphics in 1959 (focus on industrial and institutional graphics).

Today he is known nationally and internationally for his outstanding work as a book designer.

In 1979, Jost Hochuli was one of the co-founders of the VGS publishing association (today publishing association) St. Gallen. The small publisher mainly - but not exclusively - publishes local and regional items. From its founding until 2004, Jost Hochuli headed the publishing house as president, and until 2011 he was also responsible for the design of the books. As editor and designer, Jost Hochuli u. a. the much-acclaimed series of Edition Typotron (1983–1998) and Edition Ostschweiz (since 2000).

As an author, he has published books and various articles on typography and book design. His book The Detail in Typography has been translated into eleven languages ​​in recent years and is widely used by experts. Other well-known specialist publications are his book Make Books or the Overview of Book Design in Switzerland.

Jost Hochuli always passed on knowledge and experience to younger designers in class. From 1967 to 1980, as successor to Walter Käch, he was a part-time teacher of type at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, and later also for formal basic training for graphic designers - interrupted by a six-month study visit to England in 1968. From 1980 to 1996, Hochuli was part-time teacher of type at the School for Design in St.Gallen, as well as head of the extra-occupational training course ‹Typographic Designer›. In 1988, Hochuli did not accept an appointment as professor of type, especially typography, at the University of Essen.

Today, as a designer, Jost Hochuli regularly oversees book projects, organizes and curates exhibitions on the subject of book design and holds lectures, seminars and workshops at home and abroad. In 2010 he founded the typefoundry abc litera with typographers Roland Stieger and Jonas Niedermann, which also sells his first typeface, Allegra.
