Jouko Grip

Jouko Grip (born January 10, 1949 in Pälkäne ) is a Finnish cross-country skier and athlete from Pälkäne and with 12 gold medals the most successful Finnish participant in Paralympic Games .

Life

From 1980 to 2002, Grip took part in all seven Winter Paralympics as a cross-country skier and won a total of 15 medals (10 gold, 5 silver). He is also active as a middle-distance runner and javelin thrower and has participated in these disciplines in the two Summer Paralympics in New York (1984) and Seoul (1988). He won two gold medals. In addition, he is 10 times world champion.

Grip used its success to promote disabled sports in Finland. He is a trainer at the FairSport Institute Räyskälän leirikeskus for disabled children, which was founded in 1985, and works in various organizations whose aim is to make everyday life easier for the disabled.

In 2005 he was awarded the Pro Athlete Award 2005 by the Finnish Ministry of Education for his work . The following year, on March 10, 2006, he was inducted into the newly founded "Hall of Fame" of Paralympic Sports by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), together with the skier Annemie Schneider and the trainer Ulla Renvall .

Grip suffered from poliomyelitis , which crippled his left hand.
