Jowo Rinpoche ( Tib . : jo bo rin po che ; also: Jowo Shakyamuni ; "Precious Lord") is the name of a 1.5 meter high gilded bronze statue that depicts Buddha Siddhartha Gautama as a twelve-year-old prince. She is venerated in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa and is considered one of the most sacred statues in Tibet .

history

According to tradition, the statue was created by the deity Visvakarman after the advice of Indra while the Buddha was still alive and later came to China from India . The Chinese princess Wen Cheng is said to have brought it to Lhasa as a dowry on the occasion of her marriage to Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century and also selected the location of its installation.

According to a source discovered by Giuseppe Tucci , the original statue is said to have been destroyed during the invasion of the Djungars in 1717 , in which case the statue revered today should be regarded as a replica.
