Joy Baluch

Nancy Joy Baluch AM (born October 10, 1932 in Port Augusta , South Australia , † May 14, 2013 ) was an Australian politician .

Live and act

Joy Baluch was born on October 10, 1932. Her parents were George Budgeon Copley and Jessie Stuart. She went to Port Augusta Primary School and Port Augusta High School .

Joy Baluch married Teofil Stefan Branch, a Ukrainian who was imprisoned in a concentration camp in Dachau during World War II .

From 1949 to 1953 Baluch worked as a senior stenographer in the mechanical engineering department of the Commonwealth Railways .

From 1961 to 1981 Baluch was the owner of the oldest hotel in Port Augusta.

Political commitment

In 1970 Joy Baluch was elected to Port Augusta City Council. After Joy's son, a severe asthmatic , was born, she became involved in local public health for health .

In 1981 she became mayor of Port Augusta. There, after great efforts, she enforced the ban on drinking alcoholic beverages in public places in Port Augusta.

Joy Baluch's husband died of lung cancer 16 years before she died . He was a non-smoker, but he worked in a coal power station . Baluch then fought against coal-fired power plants and advocated thermal solar energy .

In 2007 Joy Baluch was awarded the Order of Australia for her achievements in local politics .

Joy Baluch died of breast cancer on May 14, 2013 at the age of 80 . She served as Mayor of Port Augusta until her death. Her roughly 30-year tenure as mayor is said to have been the longest term in Australia. A bridge over the Spencer Gulf is to be named in honor of Joy Baluch.
