Joy Ganiyat Onaolapo (* 24. December 1982 in Sapele , † July 2013 in Edo State ) was a Nigerian Paralympics - weightlifter and powerlifter .

Life

Onaolapo suffered from paraplegia as a result of polio . She qualified for the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London and won the gold medal in the 52 kg class in the Paralympic bench press (also: powerlifting or weight pulling).

Onaolapo died in July 2013 at the age of 30. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan described "the death of Nigerian Paralympic gold medalist Ms. Joy Onaolapo as a great loss to the nation". Trainer Ijeoma Iheriobim described the late Onaolapo as a "committed and hardworking athlete".

Onaolapo was married and had two children.
