Joyce Msuya

Joyce Msuya (* 1968 ) is a Tanzanian microbiologist . She is Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and was acting head of UNEP from 2018 to 2019.

Origin and education

Joyce Msuya was born in Tanzania in 1968.

She studied biochemistry and immunology at the University of Strathclyde , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1992. In 1996, she earned a master's degree in microbiology and immunology at the University of Ottawa in Ontario ( Canada ).

Career

After completing her training, Msuya first worked in Tanzania on various private and public projects before moving to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver as an analyst for international health policy at the Liu Center for Global Studies (now the Liu Institute for Global Issues ) .

In 1998 she joined the World Bank as a health professional . At the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development , she gained experience in development economics and lending in the health sector. In 2001 she became an advisor to the World Bank chief economist Nicholas Stern . From 2005 to 2011 she worked at the International Finance Corporation in the Operational Strategy and Manufacturing, Agribusiness & Services departments .

In 2011 she was appointed Regional Coordinator for East Asia and the Pacific Region at the World Bank Institute Office. From April 2014 Msuya built the first South Korean branch of the World Bank in the Songdo district in Incheon and ran it for three years. Subsequently, she worked as an advisor to the World Bank Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific region, based in Washington, DC .

On May 21, 2018, Msuya was appointed Deputy Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) for five years by UN Secretary General António Guterres . She succeeded the Mauritanian Ibrahim Thiaw , who had been appointed Executive Director of the UNCCD .

After Erik Solheim's resignation as Managing Director of UNEP in November 2018, Msuya took over the post of Executive Director on a provisional basis until Inger Andersen officially took over this position in February 2019.

Private life

Msuya is married and has two children.
