Jozef Geirnaert (born August 27, 1790 in Eeklo , † March 20, 1859 in Gent ) was a Belgian genre painter.

Geirnaert studied from 1806 to 1814 at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Gand with Pieter Van Huffel and continued his studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerp with Willem Jacob Herreyns . After studying in Antwerp, he returned to Ghent and worked there in Joseph Paelinck's studio .

Geirnaert began exhibiting religious and genre works in the renowned salons from 1817. He got to know the work of the neoclassical French painter Jacques-Louis David , who was living and working in exile in Brussels at the time.

Geirnaert submitted a work in 1818 for a competition organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His genre scene earned him first prize. The genre scene “A Belgian officer who introduced his family to his colleague who saved his life” was also awarded a prize in 1818. In 1820 Geirnaert received a medal for his portraits in the Ghent Salon.

After the Belgian Revolution of 1830, when Belgium gained independence from the Netherlands, the artist moved to The Hague as he supported Dutch rule over Belgium. After a self-imposed exile of six years, the artist returned to Belgium in 1836.

In November 1856 he was appointed teacher of painting at the Ghent Academy. He also devoted a lot of time to his educational work. He received official recognition from the Belgian government when he was made a Knight of the Order of Leopold .

Geirnaert was married to Theresia Pinnoy.
