Willem Jacob Herreyns (Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns, born June 10, 1743 in Antwerp , † August 10, 1827 ibid) was a Flemish portrait and history painter mainly of religious motifs in the tradition of Rubens .

Life

Willem Jacob Herreyns came from a family of Antwerp artists. His father Jacob III. Herreyns, a painter and decorator, and his uncle William, a sculptor, were his first teachers. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where Balthasar Beschey (1708–1776) was one of his teachers. After graduating from the academy in 1764, he was appointed professor of geometry and perspective at the academy the following year, where he remained until 1767. Also in 1767, the Great Council of Mechelen, at the expense of the state government, had Herreyns make a series of drawings depicting the most important events in the history of the Netherlands. These drawings were later exhibited under the Maria Theresa government .

After traveling for a while, he moved to Mechelen from 1771, where he successfully founded a private painting school in 1772. In 1780 he received from King Gustav III. from Sweden the title court painter after he saw one of his pictures in the Sint-Michielsabdij . The following year, Emperor Joseph II visited his studio, for the occasion he made a portrait of the emperor.

During the French occupation, he returned to Antwerp. Here he was from 1796 professor at the École centrale . After the reorganization of the Antwerp Academy in 1804, he was appointed director of the Académie de Peinture, Sculpture et Architecture de la Ville d'Anvers . He held this position until his death in 1827.
