life and work

Sánchez was a self-taught artist . As a religious sculptor, painter, weaver and architect, he mainly used materials that he found in the forests of his Venezuelan homeland in order, according to his own words, to "be closer to God". He made numerous depictions of Mary and crucifixes from wood and clay . Among other things, he planned and built the chapel of San Rafael de Mucuchíes from thousands of stones in 1984 together with his partner Epifanía Gil . He was buried in this chapel too. Another chapel he built with Epifanía Gil is in El Tisure, the chapel in El Bohío was dedicated to Our Lady of Coromoto . His buildings earned him the nickname Architect of the Andes .

In the center of Mérida is the Casa de la Kultur Juan Félix Sánchez, which shows changing exhibitions of artists and artisans from the region on the upper floor.
