Juan Gualberto González

Juan Gualberto González (born July 12, 1851 in Asunción , † July 30, 1912 ibid) was a Paraguayan judge , politician and President (1890-1894).

After studying in Buenos Aires , he returned to Asunción and founded a teacher training college. In 1872 he became judge of the first instance at the commercial court, in 1877 president of the public credit institution, in 1881 minister of justice, culture and education and in 1887 a member of parliament. On November 25, 1890, at the age of 39, he was elected President. Under his government, the Argentine Code of Commerce was introduced in Paraguay and new settler colonies were established for over 1700 European immigrants. After the banking crisis worsened, he introduced the property tax. He created the office of mayor in Asunción, had the railway built up to the Río Pirapó , founded an agricultural academy and built a hospital. On June 9, 1894, he was ousted by a coup and replaced by Vice President Marcos A. Morínigo . He died in his hometown at the age of 61.
