Juan Luis Arsuaga (* 1954 in Madrid ) is a Spanish paleoanthropologist . He became internationally known in professional circles as co-director of the excavations of hominine fossils in the Sierra de Atapuerca . Together with José María Bermúdez de Castro and other colleagues, he has been researching the Sima de los Huesos site since 1992 , in which a group of 28 very completely preserved individuals of the species Homo heidelbergensis of all ages and genders was discovered.

Juan Luis Arsuaga is Professor in the Department of Paleontology in the Faculty of Geology at Complutense University of Madrid . Since 2013 he has also been the Scientific Director of the Museo de la Evolución Humana in Burgos .

Arsuaga first caused a stir in 1990 after he had recovered stone tools from layers at the Gran Dolina site , the age of which has been dated to almost a million years. This contradicted the previously valid assumption that Europe was only colonized by homosexuals 500,000 years ago . Associated fossils, which are identified as Homo antecessor , were probably recovered later.

Honors

Arsuaga is an honorary doctorate from the University of Burgos and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences . In 1997, the Atapuerca team he led was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize in the scientific and technical research category.
