Juan de Araujo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan de Araujo (* 1646 in Villafranca , Spain , † 1712 in La Plata ) was a Peruvian composer.

Juan de Araujo came to the Spanish viceroyalty of Peru as a child with his father and studied at the University of San Marcos in Lima . There is no evidence that he was a student of Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco , as is occasionally stated. Apparently he was forced to leave the city by the viceroy the Conde de Lemos , but returned to the cathedral in Lima in 1672 , where he succeeded Fray Pedro Jiménez as conductor in 1674 . In 1676 he left Lima again and moved to the Cathedral of Panama . In 1680 he returned to Peru as Kapellmeister of the Cathedral of La Plata.

In addition to masses , motets , cantatas and villancicos, he also composed secular choral and instrumental music.
