Judith von Backnang

Judith "von Backnang" (* around 1080; † around 1123 in Backnang ) was the wife of the Baden margrave Hermann II. She was the daughter of Hessos II and belonged to the Hesson dynasty . As a dowry , she brought the important city of Backnang into the marriage, which was concluded around 1111.

Due to the fact that all early Baden margraves had the same name and the predominant female name at that time was "Judith" and at the same time the corresponding sources can be interpreted ambiguously, there were extensive discussions about Judith's descent and the origin of the Backnang inheritance. Earlier, Judith von Backnang was equated with the wife of the same name Hermann I and a descent from the Counts of Calw was assumed. The wife of Hermann II was then Judith von Dillingen or Judith von Hohenberg . Occasionally it was also suspected that Hermann II was married to two women named "Judith". According to current research, however, only the marriage with the Hessonian heiress von Backnang can be considered secure.

Backnang had previously been owned by the Hessonen from Sülchgau for about a century before it fell to Baden through their marriage. The place quickly became an important center of the margravate. Margrave Hermann II and his wife Judith founded the Augustinian Canons' Monastery with the collegiate church of St. Pankratius in the village in 1116 as a new family burial place , in which they were both buried - as were 5 generations after them.

Their marriage resulted in at least one son, Hermann (III.) , Who succeeded his father as margrave, and a daughter (Judith?) , Who presumably married Ulrich I of Carinthia .
