Hermann II (Baden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margrave Hermann II of Baden (* around 1060; † October 7, 1130 ) established the title of Margrave of Baden for the first time by naming it after the new rulership center on Hohenbaden Castle (Old Castle) in today's city of Baden-Baden .

Life

Hermann II. Is the son of Hermann I of Verona and his wife Judith . His father had within the Zähringen family and by his grandfather I. Berthold run (titular) Duchy of Carinthia the title of Marquis of Verona held. Out of this tradition, Hermann initially carried the title of Margrave of Limburg (around 1100) in addition to the title of Count in Breisgau (1087 ) and named himself for the first time in 1112 after the new center of Baden .

The formation of this new center goes back to the balance between Staufern and Zähringern around the Duchy of Swabia , in whose train Hermann II received in 1098 from the Emperor Baden-Baden and the bailiwick of the Selz Monastery . Immediately afterwards, he was likely to have started building Hohenbaden Castle on the foundation walls of an old Celtic ring wall .

The fact that he increased the ducal rank of his uncle Berthold II and his cousin Konrad may have played an important role in the transfer of the title to Baden . Then Hermann carried the title Dominus in Baden, comes Brisgaviae, marchio de Verona (Lord in Baden, Count of Breisgau, Margrave of Verona).

Together with his wife Judith von Backnang, Hermann II founded the Augustinian Canons ' Monastery in Backnang as a burial place and memorial for his family and furnished it with additional properties in 1123 - probably after the death of his wife. Hermann II was also buried here, the following can be read on his grave slab in Latin script:

"In this tumba lies Margrave Hermann von Baden, who was the founder of this monastery and temple. He died a hundred and three times ten in the millennium from the child who gave birth to the pious virgin. When he was transferred here with the offspring fifteen hundred years have passed, plus ten and three. " Source: Backnang Collegiate Church.

As Margrave of Baden , Hermann has the ordinal number I, as the bearer of the name Hermann in the family, the ordinal number II. The explanations here follow the latter count.

Commemoration

"The House of Baden is celebrating 900 years of the Margrave of Baden! 900 years ago, on April 27, 1112, Margrave Hermann II was first referred to as Margrave of Baden, after his Hohenbaden Castle above today's city of Baden-Baden."
