history

In 1959, the GDR authorities began to set up a prison command in a field north of the village of Raßnitz. In the course of the planned open- cast lignite mining south of Raßnitz, an extensive relocation of the White Elster became necessary. The Raßnitz prisoners were to be used there as workers. On May 14, 1960, the first 120 prisoners were housed in a barrack camp. In 1961 there were already 450 prisoners living in the camp.

After the Elster had been relocated, the prisoners were deployed in the open-cast lignite mine and in the Merseburg slip-on concrete plant . In the 1970s, prisoners were also deployed in Buna Schkopau in property I54, as well as in BIR's own company to build the wall around the property.

Between 1985 and 1989 the gate and service building as well as the vehicle lock were rebuilt.

In December 1998 the order to demolish most of the building was placed. The state of construction of the building was dilapidated and could not be renovated, so it was decided to rebuild what is now the Raßnitz youth institution. The 73 million euro new building is intended to serve as a model for the penal system.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 29, 2000 and the topping-out ceremony in 2001. After a construction period of 28 months, the Raßnitz youth institution was completed in 2002.
