There are 631 prison places in the prison. Of these, 613 are places the closed prisons, another 18 places of accommodation in the context of preventive detention . The total area of ​​the correctional facility is 220,532 m² on which 15 buildings are erected. In addition to four prison houses, three factory halls and a sports hall, there is an administrative building, a gate building, a building for service facilities, a building for access and visitors, a kitchen wing, a building with storage areas and a two-storey roofed main thoroughfare. The built-up area is 49,443 m². The facility is surrounded by a 1,565 meter long wall.

history

On November 11, 2003, the state government of Saxony-Anhalt decided to build a new correctional facility, although the location initially remained open. The decision for the current location was made on September 21, 2004. The construction was carried out by way of a public-private partnership . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 16, 2007. Attendees included the Minister of Justice Angela Kolb , the Minister for Regional Development and Transport Karl-Heinz Daehre and the Mayor of Burger, Bernhard Sterz . The topping-out ceremony followed on April 7, 2008, in addition to Angela Kolb and Karl-Heinz Daehre, members of the state parliament Ronald Brachmann and Matthias Graner as well as the district administrator Lothar Finzelberg were present. House number Madel 100 was handed over on August 5, 2008. The penal institution was handed over on April 30, 2009. The first head of the institution was Holger Johannes Lüth. The actual commissioning took place on May 1st, 2009. On the open day on May 9th, 2009, 22,000 people visited the correctional facility. The first prisoners were taken on May 12, 2009, regular operations on November 1, 2009.
