Jugendliebe is a song that was composed by Bernd Henning in 1978 and written by Burkhard Lasch . Ute Freudenberg interpreted the title with the group Elefant . It was their biggest hit in the GDR and is considered a "classic of GDR rock and pop history".

Ute Freudenberg performed with Elefant from 1976. Jugendliebe was born in 1978. The hit was composed by the band's later guitarist, Bernd Henning. Burkhard Lasch, who was also the manager of the band, wrote the lyrics. The first major public performance of this title took place in 1978 at a concert on Usedom . Later the band around Ute Freudenberg was completely reformed and moved to East Berlin . In 1979, Jugendliebe was produced as a broadcast on the Berlin radio. The piece was released as a single by Amiga in 1980 . The song appeared in the same year on the first LP of the same name by Ute Freudenberg and Elefant. This LP was also published in another edition in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1980 . Ute Freudenberg sings childhood love to this day in concerts.

The song describes the love between a 14 year old girl and a boy. The boy “spoke of love”, the girl dreams of a future together. Years later, they meet again and think back to their feelings from back then. The refrain follows the opening stanza. After a few lines - which describe the reunion - the chorus follows twice, with a line in between, in which one learns that the two kissed.

Jugendliebe is written throughout in a major key in slow four-four time . The simple melody is accompanied by a keyboard and a subtle rhythm section. The verse is sung low, the melody rises to the chorus.

In 1980 Ute Freudenberg was voted the most popular singer of the year for the first time in the GDR. In 2005, the song was voted 16th in the ZDF broadcast Our Best - Hits of the Century . Ute Freudenberg's biography, published in 2012, is called Jugendliebe - a biography. A series of compilations on GDR popular music is called Jugendliebe. Those were our hits . The double CD with Freudenberg titles from 40 years, released in 2012, is also called Jugendliebe.
