Art Nouveau music

Art Nouveau music is a controversial term in music history for the music of some composers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The concept of epochs has not been able to gain general acceptance so far, because the Art Nouveau in music has only a low level of stylistic uniformity and cannot be clearly separated from Romanticism and Impressionism .

Nevertheless, common characteristics of the music around the turn of the century speak for Art Nouveau music as a separate stylistic epoch. It is characterized by a rambling, ornamental melody, a harmony that pushes to the limits of tonality and a colorful instrumentation. Just as important, however, is the subjective aspect of this music, which ultimately reflects the fin de siecle 's attitude to life . On the one hand she shows a tendency towards the grotesque and morbid, on the other hand towards the sensual, exotic and decadent.

Representatives of Art Nouveau music are Gustav Mahler , Richard Strauss , Alexander von Zemlinsky , Franz Schreker and Alexander Scriabin , whose works most clearly show Art Nouveau features. Furthermore, works by Josef Suk , Karol Szymanowski , Cyril Scott , Gustav Holst , Frederick Delius , Erich Wolfgang Korngold and early works by Alban Berg and Arnold Schönberg are often associated with Art Nouveau.
