Juhan Sutist

Juhan Sütiste (born December 28, 1899 in Tähtvere , † February 10, 1945 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer and poet .

Life

Juhan Sütiste (until 1936 Johannes Schütz) worked as an apprentice watchmaker after leaving school . He took part in the Estonian War of Independence against Soviet Russia . Sütiste studied from 1923 to 1931 at the Philosophical and Law Faculties of the University of Tartu , but without obtaining a formal degree. He was also a successful athlete . He has worked as a freelance writer in Tartu since he was a student . He made many trips around the world. 1929/30 he was editor of the literary newspaper Kirjanduslik Orbiit . From 1938 to 1941 he was the dramaturge of the Eesti Draamateater in Tallinn.

In 1940 he welcomed the Soviet occupation of Estonia in his poem Maakera pöördub itta , but soon turned away from the Stalinist system. With the German occupation of Estonia he was imprisoned in 1941. In 1942 he was released from prison. In 1945 he died after a heart attack.

Literary work

Juhan Sütiste made his debut as a poet in 1921. In 1925, his writings appeared in the two collective works Sang and Boomerang . In 1928 his poetry collection Rahutus brought the literary breakthrough. He has written numerous works on the social inequality in Estonia and the fate of the common people. Sütiste wrote true to life, especially in the 1930s. In addition, he wrote travel and nature impressions and worked as a respected theater critic.
