Jules-Arsène Garnier (born January 12, 1847 in Paris , † December 25, 1889 there ) was a French painter.

Garnier was a student of the history painter Jean-Léon Gérôme . Like his teacher, Garnier found his subjects in richly figured cultural and moral images of antiquity ; with a penchant for the dramatic atrocity scene. Already at the age of 22 Jules-Arsène Garnier was able to debut two works on the occasion of the annual exhibition of the Paris Salon of 1869: “A bathing woman” and the lascivious night picture “Mlle de Sombreuil, drinking a glass of blood”.

With these two paintings he also had his artistic breakthrough and the “shuddering” audience demanded more from him. This was followed in quick succession, along with a few others, by the study of manners “Das Herrenrecht” (1872) and “Le roi s'amuse” (1874). Garnier was inspired by reading Victor Hugo for the latter . In 1876 he painted Punishment of Adulterers , a medieval moral picture with great coloristic effect.

For the major exhibition of the Parisian Salon in 1877, Garnier created “The Favorite, to whom the Head of the Competitor who has just been beheaded is brought”. According to his own statements, reading “Orientales” (Victor Hugo) was the trigger for the creation of this work.

In 1878 Jules-Arsène Garnier presented his work “The Liberator” to the public. According to a note in the "Journal officiel" of June 17, 1877, it meant the politician Adolphe Thiers , who in May 1871 had the uprising of the Paris Commune put down.

In his late work, despite the drama, almost humorous representations come into their own. In 1879, for example, Garnier created “The Temptation”: a pious hermit is brought into dire conscience by two naked women.

His attempt to deal with modern fabrics on a large scale with “Distribution of the Flags” (July 14, 1880), however, failed.
