Jules Gonin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jules Gonin (born August 10, 1870 in Lausanne ; † June 10, 1935 ibid) was a Swiss ophthalmologist , professor of ophthalmology and director of the University Eye Clinic in Lausanne. Gonin developed a method to treat retinal detachment .

Work and honors

From 1904 on, Gonin was particularly concerned with researching retinal detachment , which at the time almost invariably led to blindness. Gonin realized that the retinal detachment was caused by cracks in the retina. As a result, he developed a method with which these cracks could be localized and closed again using a thermocautery . For this work Gonin was awarded the Swiss Science Prize Marcel Benoist in 1928 and - posthumously - the Graefe Medal in 1940 . Gonin also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Strasbourg . Since 1941, the International Council of Ophthalmology has also awarded the Gonin Medal every four years for special achievements in the field of ophthalmology. The University Eye Clinic in Lausanne is now named after Jules Gonin (L'hôpital ophtalmique Jules-Gonin).
