reception

He worked brilliantly after the great masters; like Frans Hals , Jean-Baptiste Greuze , Ernest Meissonier , Rembrandt van Rijn , Joshua Reynolds , Jan Vermeer and others. a. Another major focus of his work were his illustrations of works by his father, or those by Henri Barbet de Jouy ("Gemmes et joyaux de la couronne"). A little dry at first, he achieved a technique of unsurpassable virtuosity, which reproduces the luster and texture of the vases, precious stones, etc. with painterly perfection.
