Jules Putzeys

Jules Antoine Adolphe Henri Putzeys (born May 1, 1809 in Liège , † January 2, 1882 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian lawyer and entomologist .

Life

In 1829, at the age of 19, Putzeys received the degree of Doctor of Science. He later received a doctorate in law . He began his career at the Liege Court of Appeal and later became Deputy Public Prosecutor in Arlon . In 1840 he went to the Ministry of Justice in Brussels , where he was appointed Secretary General in 1858. He was an expert in judicial statistics and represented the judiciary in the Commission centrale de statistique since 1844. In 1879 he was appointed government commissioner for general and international statistics. He retired in 1880.

In addition, Putzeys was a respected amateur entomologist devoted to the study of butterflies , dragonflies, and beetles . His main focus was the sand beetles , ground beetles and Palpenkäfern of which he several new taxa described. His first descriptions include the genera Cylindronotum , Ardistomus , Aspidoglossa , Schizogenius , Oxydrepanus and the tribe Pasimachini . 1857 Putzeys described the begonias -Art Begonia rex from Assam .

From 1874 to 1876 he was president of the Société royale belge d'entomologie , where he continued to work after he left office. He was a good friend of Baron Maximilien de Chaudoir (1816–1881), a well-known Russian coleopterologist.

In 1851 Putzeys was made a knight and in 1871 a commander of the Order of the Leopold .

Putzey's best-known writings include Prémices entomologiques (1845), Monographie des Clivina et genres voisins (1846), Révision générale des Clivinides (1867), Monograph des Amara de l'Europe et des pays voisins (1870) and Monograph des Calathides (1873) .

His beetle collection is at the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences in Brussels.

Dedication names

The genera Putzeysia and Putzeysius as well as the species Chalepus putzeysi , Trechus putzeysi , Lesticus putzeysi and Orthogonius putzeysi are named after Putzeys .
