Jules Wabbes was the son of Henry Justin Gommire Wabbes (1874-1959) and Rachel Pintens Londerzeel (1890-1946). The family came from Mechelen and ran a boat building and timber trading company. Wabbes left school at the age of 16, began a career as an actor and then worked in other professions, such as a freelance photographer with his own business in Brussels. After the end of the Second World War, he opened an antiques and interior design business there with Louise Carrey, before switching to interior design and furnishing in the 1950s. The focus of his work was soon on furniture construction and the use of recycled materials. Wabbes eventually opened a restoration shop and dealt with the construction techniques of old furniture. Friends from the art scene eventually brought him to work in the field of modern design. Jules Wabbes was a professor at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels.

Jules Wabbes was married to the designer, cartoonist, illustrator and children's book author Mary Wabbes from 1960; the couple had four children, Sylvie, Marie, Julie and Henry.
