Jules Albert Wijdenbosch (born May 2, 1941 in Paramaribo , Suriname ) is a Surinamese political scientist and politician; he was Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Suriname.

Wijdenbosch studied political science and administration at the University of Amsterdam . Afterwards he was a lawyer in Amsterdam. After returning to Suriname, he turned to politics and was Prime Minister of his country for the first time from February 12, 1987 to January 25, 1988.

After the so-called telephone coup on December 24, 1990 by the military under Desi Bouterse , he was Vice-President of the country from January 7, 1991 to September 16, 1991.

Reigned 1996-2000

After the parliamentary elections in 1996, he replaced Ronald Venetiaan in the office of President from September 14, 1996 to August 12, 2000 . The premature end of his term of office was to be found in the government debt that could not be improved and the accusation of private financial donations by the Central Bank of Suriname. His popularity with the people, including the decision to build the first and only bridge over the Suriname in Paramaribo , did not diminish.
