Julián del Casal (born November 7, 1863 in Havana ; † October 21, 1893 there ) was a Cuban writer .

Casal appeared primarily as a poet. His main work consists of musical, melancholy poems. He was one of the most important Cuban representatives of the literary movement of Modernismo . These modernistas , alongside Casal mainly Rubén Darío , were influenced by French modernism.

Life

Casal, the son of a Spaniard and a Cuban, lost his mother at the age of 5, with whom, unlike his father, he had a close relationship. Many observers saw this as Casal's most formative moment, which also influenced his work. He attended the Real Colegio in Belén until 1879 . He then attended the University of Havana and took a job with the local authorities. At the same time he worked as a journalist for La Habana Elegante . However, due to a report critical of the government, he had to give up this position.

To avoid further sanctions he went to Spain , but soon returned to Cuba for financial reasons. From then on, Casal devoted himself to his literary work and came into contact with colleagues such as Gustave Moreau and Rubén Darío . He published his first works after the death of his father in 1885. Some of his first publications in Cuban newspapers appeared under the pseudonym Hernani .
