Julia Esquivel
Julia Esquivel Velásquez (born May 3, 1930 in San Marcos , Guatemala ; † July 19, 2019 ) was a Guatemalan poet and human rights activist .
Life
Esquivel studied at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala , the Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano in Costa Rica and the Ecumenical Institute Bossey in Switzerland . She was now active as a teacher and pastoral social worker. Furthermore, she worked as a poet and human rights activist for the indigenous population. As a result, she was subjected to repression and had to go into exile in 1980. Esquivel now lived in Mexico and Nicaragua , and for a total of eight years in Switzerland among the sisters of the Grandchamp community .
In 1994 she received from the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Bern , the honorary doctorate awarded.
