Julia Ostertag

Julia Ostertag (born 1970 in Stuttgart ) is a German film director and film producer . The focus of her work is on independent films and documentaries .

Life

Ostertag began making experimental films as early as the 1990s . In 1989 she began studying film studies and painting at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and later moved to the Braunschweig University of Art . She completed her studies in 2003 with a diploma and the short film Sexjunkie . The film was awarded Best Short Film Germany 2003 at the first Pornfilmfest Berlin .

She started the preparatory work for the film Gender X in 2003 and completed the project in 2005. In the same year the film was shown at the Berlinale . At the Mix Film Fest Brasil Sao Paulo 2006 the contribution won the Audience Award .

In 2006 and 2007 she worked on her first feature film - the Punk - dystopia Saila . The film won the Best Feature Award at the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival and the Best Experimental Film Award at the Female Eye Film Fest Toronto . With Under the red Umbrella she published a short portrait of a sex worker in 2009 , which was shown at various national and international festivals.

She subsequently worked with Francesca Araiza Andrade on the documentary Noise & Resistance about the European DIY subculture. The New Visions Film Distribution brought the film in 2011 in German cinemas, the DVD was released in 2012 for good! Movies and distribution of Indigo . Arte broadcast the documentary in 2013 and 2016, and the film was shown at numerous international festivals. In 2013 GMfilms released the music documentary And You Belong , which was released on the Fringe! Fest London premiered.

In 2016, after three years of work, her second feature film, Dark Circus , was released, a fantasy film shot in the Berlin fetish and underground scene in which a girl is kidnapped into an occult parallel universe. Just six weeks after its release at L´Étrange Festival Paris, the film won several awards at the MAC Underground Film Festival in Manaus, Brazil.
