Portrait of Julie Zanders

Julie Zanders , b. Müller (born June 17, 1804 in Bergisch Gladbach ; † November 28, 1869 there ) was a German paper manufacturer .

Life

Julie Zanders was the daughter of the paper manufacturer Gustav Müller from the Dombacher Mühle, today the Alte Dombach paper museum . She became the wife of the paper manufacturer Johann Wilhelm Zanders . The marriage resulted in four children born in 1824, 1826, 1828 and 1830. When her husband died on September 4, 1831, she had to continue running the company, the Schnabelsmühle paper factory .

The entrepreneur

Every morning she went into the office on time and checked the factory. She had the sole power of attorney and managed the cash register alone. In 1833 she bought the Kradepohl mill from the Fauth heirs. She led the plant for six years, then her strength ran out. For 2,000 thalers she leased the factory and business for 12 years to Ferdinand Wachendorff and Eduard Knobel , who both owned the Schnabelsmühle under the company Wachendorff & Comp. continued to operate. The JW Zanders company did not go out, it was just dormant.

The mother and educator

Zanders moved with her family to Bonn in 1836 in order to take care of the upbringing of their children, especially their eldest son Carl Richard Zanders , who was very talented. In the lively intercourse with intellectuals at the Rheinische Universität Bonn , Zanders found inspiration and help for her future life. She was the focus of a circle of friends and interlocutors, including Ernst Moritz Arndt , Gottfried and Johanna Kinkel and Clemens Theodor Perthes . Most of them remained lifelong friends of their home and children.

New departure

In 1848 Z. returned to Bergisch Gladbach and took over the business again. The lease years had not been conducive to the expansion of the plant. During this time in particular, the manufacture of paper had gone through developments that had not been implemented in the leased company. The eldest son Carl Richard supported his mother from now on in the management of the company. Nevertheless, Z. initially remained the sole managing director. It was not until 1857 that she made him an equal partner.
