Carl Richard Zanders (born July 16, 1826 in Bergisch Gladbach ; † August 23, 1870 there ) was a German paper manufacturer .

Life

Carl Richard was the eldest son of Johann Wilhelm Zanders and Julie Zanders . After his school instruction and studies in Bonn he went to the Schnabelsmühle in Bergisch Gladbach as an apprentice at his mother's request in 1846 . From April 1847 he traveled through all the major German cities from Hamburg to Munich and from Leipzig to Vienna , and later to nearby Belgium and the Netherlands . He visited many other paper manufacturers in order to expand his knowledge, but also to refresh connections with old wholesalers and to make new ones. When his mother and the family returned to Bergisch Gladbach, he joined the JW Zanders company in Schnabelsmühle in 1848 . On June 17, 1857 he married Maria Zanders , b. Johanny-Abhoë, the daughter of a Hückeswagen cloth manufacturer. The marriage resulted in four children, including Richard Zanders and Margarete († 1917), who married the Prussian district president Francis Kruse .

Act

Zanders entered paper production at a time when the old paper mills were being turned into industrial factories. From the time when the Schnabelsmühle was temporarily leased for 12 years, there was a lot to catch up on. Paper machines had found their way everywhere. Even if Zanders only became an equal partner with his mother in 1857, he had already implemented decisive improvements: In 1851 he built a drying room with a device for rapid drying; In 1854 an up-to-date calendering machine followed and the glue was improved; In 1855 steam tube heating was installed in the smoothing room and rags chamber, a boiler house with a steam engine was built, as well as a rag kitchen and a laboratory ; In 1856 he set up a mechanical workshop with a lathe and bought a Dutch washing machine ; A new paper machine followed in 1860 as a temporary high point .

In 1868 he bought the Gohrsmühle. This brought the company significant advantages for further spatial expansion with the construction of larger factory buildings and high chimneys. He could no longer reap the fruits of his labor because he died a short time later of an insidious disease.
