Johann Wilhelm Zanders (born January 12, 1795 in Düsseldorf , † September 4, 1831 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German entrepreneur and paper manufacturer . He was the founder of the JW Zanders company .

Life

Johann Wilhelm Zanders came from the Protestant Düsseldorf entrepreneurial family Zanders, whose male members had long belonged to academic professions. His father Johann Wilhelm Gottfried Zanders was the first city medic and medical advisor in the Bergische royal seat . He determined that Zanders would first begin practical preparation in forestry at the Forstrat Andreae in Cologne after graduating from high school. From May 12, 1816, he studied political science in Göttingen for three semesters. In the winter semester of 1817, he moved to Marburg to study forest sciences . After graduation, he began his practical work at the Königsforst forestry in Bensberg (at that time still an independent municipality). Later he married Julie Müller , the daughter of the paper manufacturer Gustav Müller from the Dombacher Mühle, today's paper museum Alte Dombach , in Bergisch Gladbach (not yet connected with Bensberg at that time).

The art collector and entrepreneur

Already during his studies he showed great interest in book auctions and the acquisition of expensive copperplate printing. During his time in Bensberg, he bought land and houses in Bergisch Gladbach, which his uncle Hofrat Fauth sold to control the decline of his paper mill. In 1822 he moved to Bergisch Gladbach as a freelance trader, after having bought two more small estates there. On July 16, 1824, he and his uncle's son, Gottfried Fauth, founded the new company Fauth & Zanders in the Schnabelsmühle. His first activity consisted in building a laboratory and a tall dry house on the Russian model . The introduction of double-entry bookkeeping, an annual inventory and presentation of the final invoices also showed the merchant in him. With the death of Gottfried Fauth on February 11, 1829, the company dissolved again. Zanders quickly took over the share from Fauth and founded the JW Zanders paper mill on July 28, 1829.
