Julien Cardy (born September 29, 1981 in Pau ) is a former French football player .
Career
Youth (until 2001)
Cardy, whose father has Basque roots, started playing football at preschool age in his hometown with the amateur club JAB FC Pau . He then wore the FA Bourbaki Pau jersey until he made the leap to the junior performance center of the first division club FC Nantes at the age of 15 . After going through two youth teams, he was accepted into the reserve team in 1998, but the hope of advancing to the professional team was not fulfilled. In 2000, his contract was not renewed because those responsible at Nantes agreed that he had the necessary quality for a career in the first division.
With the departure from Nantes, his dream of a possible professional career was by no means over, because with FC Toulouse another top division club secured the junior player for its second team. In particular, Cardy's versatility in midfield had convinced the responsible Erick Mombaerts at the time.
With Toulouse up to the first division (2001-2006)
In the run-up to the 2001/02 season, the first division club FC Toulouse was revoked its license for financial reasons, which led to relegation to the third division. For Cardy this resulted in the immediate promotion to the third division team. He immediately became a regular player and experienced promotion to the second highest division in 2002.
By jumping into the second division, the return to professional football was successful, so that Cardy made his professional debut when he came on as a substitute on August 3, 2002 in a 4-0 away win against FC Istres in the 82nd minute. In the following time he was usually a member of the starting line-up and in this way made his contribution to the direct march through to the top national league. At the age of 21 he was on the field on September 14, 2003 in a 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain and thus completed his first encounter in the French elite league. Even after promotion, it mostly occupied a regular place, although it was not completely unchallenged. Bad luck haunted him when he had to be replaced on February 5, 2005 in a 4-0 defeat against Olympique Lyon due to a serious adductor injury and was subsequently without a mission for half a year. Although he quickly reintegrated into the team afterwards, he had to pause for a few weeks again due to another injury in the 2005/06 season.
Second division with Metz, Tours and Arles (2006-2014)
Although he still had prospects at Toulouse, he signed with the second division team FC Metz in 2006 and cost them a transfer fee of 300,000 euros. This was followed by a season in which the otherwise low-scoring player, who is mainly based in defensive midfield, crossed the finish line six times and thus also made an offensive contribution to the promotion he achieved in 2007. From this success, however, he did not benefit at all in personal terms, as he suffered a long-lasting injury in preparation for the 2007/08 season. On January 12, 2008 he came back in a 1-1 draw against Lille OSC , but had to be replaced at half time due to severe pain in his foot. He stopped playing until the summer break and therefore had to sit and watch as his teammates had to accept the direct relegation. From the summer of 2008, the situation improved for him, he fought his way back into the starting eleven and narrowly missed promotion with Metz in both 2009 and 2010. For the 2010/11 season he left the club and moved to league rivals FC Tours .
At Tours he was also an undisputed part of the first team and found himself with them in the middle of the second division table. In 2012 the player went to the same division competitor AC Arles-Avignon after his contract expired . At times there were serious relegation concerns for Arles-Avignon, but Cardy and his teammates were able to secure the class in both 2013 and 2014.
Late return to the first division with Guingamp (from 2014)
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, the then 32-year-old managed to return to the top French division, despite his relatively old age, when the reigning cup winner EA Guingamp signed him. This led to the reunion with Thibault Giresse , who was a few months older and had been his most important companion during their years together in Toulouse. However, Cardy was almost not considered for missions in the following time, but played more often in the following season 2015/16.
