Location, accessibility

Location next to the pass road

The Julier Theater is located directly on the pass road over the Julier in close proximity to the summit of the pass. The distance to St. Moritz in the east is approx. 15 km, to Chur in the northwest approx. 75 km. The theater can be reached by car on the pass road. A bus line (PostBus) also runs over the Julier Pass.

If necessary, shuttle bus connections are set up for events. Access to events in the Juliertheater can be regulated in such a way that only public transport is permitted and private cars cannot find a parking space.

building

inner space

The building stands free in the otherwise undeveloped area and appears as a tower with the floor plan of a regular ten-pointed star, the short rays of which are formed by flat apses at all ten corners of the floor plan. In this respect, it is reminiscent of the Castel del Monte in Apulia in Italy. According to the will of the creators, it should also allude to the tower of Babylon and cite elements of the most varied of theater construction methods.

All 10 side walls are broken up by large arched windows that form spectator boxes inside and which, from a distance, create the impression of a building with five floors. The tower is about 30 meters high and about 25 meters in diameter.

The walls are built with 12 cm thick solid wood panels that have been prefabricated elsewhere to form building elements. These were transported to the construction site with low loaders and assembled there. The building is painted dark red both inside and outside.

Inside, a stage is suspended in the middle from chains. The spectator boxes in the window arches can accommodate up to 220 spectators.

The building was designed and planned by Giovanni Netzer , director of the Origen Festival Cultural , and Walter Bieler

History, planning, use, financing

The construction of the theater goes back to an idea by Giovanni Netzer, director of the Origen theater company. For the performances he produced, he wanted to create a suitably designed venue in addition to the existing, sometimes cramped performance venues in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

With the support of representatives from business, politics and culture, the idea of the Juliertheater was presented to the public in early 2016. The theater was built in the summer of 2017 and took three months. The building opened on July 31, 2017, and the first opera was performed on August 3, 2017 .

The Juliertheater is used by the Origen Festival Cultural as one of its stages. It can also be used as a meeting place. In September 2018, as a stopover, it hosted a meeting of six European heads of state hosted by Swiss Federal President Alain Berset .

In June 2018 the building received the award for marketing and architecture .

Initially, the dismantling of the Julier Theater and the renaturation of the building site were planned for the end of 2020. At the beginning of 2020, however, the operators applied for the booth and operating permit for the Julier Theater to be extended until August 2023.

The construction is based on a private initiative and is privately financed. The costs amounted to approx. 3 million SFr.
