Julius Cosmar (born June 17, 1820 in Stettin ; † July 21, 1899 in Gotha ) was a landowner and benefactor of the Thuringian city of Gotha.

Cosmar was the landowner of the Workallen ( Warkaly ) leasehold in the East Prussian district of Mohrungen . Six years before his death he came with his wife Katharine, nee. Shepherd (born April 7, 1824 in Kassel , † October 24, 1908 in Gotha) moved from Charlottenburg to Gotha in 1893 and became one of the city's greatest benefactors. On the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary , the couple anonymously transferred an amount of 700,000 gold marks to the city's poor, which was only given to the city for charitable purposes after the death of Julius Cosmar in 1899. The money flowed into the Cosmar Foundation, which was established in the same year. The Ducal Museum Gotha received the art collection from his estate.

The grave of the Cosmar couple is in the main cemetery in Gotha in the honorary citizen's grove behind the waiting hall.

In honor of Julius Cosmar, a street in Gotha was named that is now crossed by the street Am Tivoli, where the Tivoli is located, the founding site of the Socialist Workers' Party Germany (SAP), the immediate predecessor of the SPD . In 1971, Cosmarstrasse was renamed “Strasse der Pariser Kommune”, but was given its old name again after the fall of the Wall .
