Life
Julius Grossmann was born in Eberswalde near Berlin . After primary school he completed an apprenticeship at a clocks - Manufacturers in his birthplace. The teaching was not very good, so that he, like many others, had to rely on self-training. So he went to Berlin, where he worked for a master watchmaker. In 1851 he went on to London and from there to Neuchâtel in Switzerland. He noticed early on that not only technical, but also theoretical knowledge is necessary in his job.
In 1868 he became director and at that time the only teacher of the watchmaking school in Le Locle. Self-taught , he acquired a very extensive theoretical knowledge in his life. After 25 years of activity, he withdrew and edited scientific papers with his son Hermann Grossmann , who had been director of the watchmaking school in Neuchâtel since 1888. Julius Grossmann died in Le Locle in 1907 at the age of 78.
