Life

Julius Löwenberg attended the Talmud school in Kleczewo and the grammar school in Thorn . He then studied church history, Christian dogmatics and geography with Carl Ritter at the University of Berlin . Already during his studies he developed a rich literary activity, which developed more and more in the direction of geography through his friendly relationship with Alexander von Humboldt.

As part of Karl Christian Bruhns ' biography on Alexander von Humboldt, Löwenberg compiled a list of all publications by the famous naturalist.

In Leipzig, Löwenberg contributed significantly to the editing of the scientific Humboldt biography in three volumes and after Oskar Peschel's death he published his scattered treatises on geography and ethnology , also in three volumes (Leipzig 1877–1879).

He wrote a large number of primarily geographical books and travelogues and wrote numerous geographical and literary articles for a number of specialist journals, conversation encyclopedias and for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

Since 1889, suffering from an eye disease that made him severely disabled, he spent his old age in a Jewish retirement home in Berlin.
