Julius Penson Williams

Julius Penson Williams (* 1954 in New York City ) is an American conductor, composer and music teacher.

biography

Williams studied at the Herman H. Lehman College of the City University of New York and at the Hartt School of Music . He taught at various colleges and universities before becoming Professor of Composition and Conducting at Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a conductor he assisted Lukas Foss with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra and has led numerous well-known American and European symphony and chamber orchestras.

He was artistic director at the Costa del Sol Festival in Spain and the New York State Summer School of the Arts . In 1989 he conducted the opening concert of the Symphony Saint Paulia at Carnegie Hall , and in 1999 he opened the Tri-C Jazz Festival of Cleveland with a performance of Duke Ellington's Sacred Service .
