Schmarje was the father of Walther Schmarje (1872–1921). Schmarje was initially a high school teacher in Flensburg and Sønderborg. From April 29, 1875 he was the first teacher and head (head of the institution) of the Royal Prussian seminary, today the Ludwig-Meyn-Gymnasium in Uetersen . Julius Schmarje wrote several books as well as treatises on the school system in Hamburg, which also appeared in the Hamburg school newspaper (1893-1918).

Schmarje found his final resting place in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , grid square H 10 (above Rosengarten ). His tomb was created by his son Walther and is a stele made of shell limestone with a bronze portrait medallion in side view, which is surrounded by a garland of flowers. This tomb is occasionally considered a total work of art in some art magazines.
